I'm just curious if anyone in this tribe has a bone anchor hearing aid (BAHA)? I've recently suffered a bad infection and perforated eardrum in one ear and one of my doctors may be recommending that I switch from using a traditional, behind the ear (BTE) aid to a bone anchor aid.
Anyone have any news or experience to speak of regarding BAHAs (versus BTEs)?

Re: Bone Anchor Hearing Aid
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 1:55 PMNo, a BAHA is quite different from a cochlear implant. As I understand, with a cochlear implant, a sophisticated electronic apparatus is threaded inside the spiral of the cochlea, deep within the inner ear. With a BAHA, or bone anchor hearing aid, a platinum pin is drilled into the side of the head, and then an electronic amplifier snaps onto the platinum pin and transmits sound by bone conduction.

Generally it seems, if you're cochlea isn't functioning properly, you may benefit from a cochlear implant; however, if your cochlea is functioning reasonably well, but you have some other severe ear damage (e.g., damaged membrane, hammer, stirrup, etc .), you may benefit from a BAHA.
As far as I know, the BAHA is a somewhat new technology compared to the cochlear implant.
